Paul Westerberg Covers - 2002 Tour
Thanks to Robert Auger from the a.m.r. newsgroup for letting me steal his idea of tracking the covers that Paul has done on the tour. I think it's interesting to see what is influencing him these days, not too big a shocker that some of these songs are pretty melancholy and mournful, I defy you to even read the lyrics of "Souvenirs" (letting alone listen) without getting a little weepy. I don't have a list of which covers were done at which shows (even my penchant for organization only goes so far). So, in no particular order, oh all right, I confess, my favorite one is first.
- Souvenirs: John Prine - (lyrics/listen to the original)
I hate graveyards and old pawn shops
For they always bring me tears
I can't forgive the way they rob me
Of my childhood souvenirs
- Long Black Veil: Best-known versions by Johnny Cash & Lefty Frizzell (lyrics/The Band's version)
- These Days: Jackson Browne (lyrics)
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life I have made in song
Well it's just that I've been losing so long
- One Of The Boys: Mott The Hoople - (lyrics)
- Take Out Some Insurance: Best known version by Jimmy Reed - (lyrics)
- Don't Cry No Tears: Neil Young - (lyrics)
- Lost Highway: Originally recorded by Hank Williams (lyrics/listen to the original)
I'm a rolling stone, all alone and lost,
For a life of sin, I have paid the cost.
When I pass by, all the people say
"Just another guy on the lost highway."
- Borstal Breakout: Sham 69 - (lyrics/listen to the original)
- Tamborine Man: Bob Dylan -(lyrics)
My weariness amazes me,
I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.
- All I Really Want To Do: Bob Dylan - (lyrics)
- Like A Rolling Stone: Bob Dylan - (lyrics)
- You Just May Be The One: The Monkees (written by Mike Nesmith) - (lyrics)
All men must have someone, have someone
Who would never take advantage
Of a love bright as the sun
Someone to stand beside them
And you just may be the one
Someone to understand them,
And you just may be the one
I have the above on the original vinyl copy of "Headquarters" and dug it out of the basement for a listen today.
- No Expectations: The Rolling Stones - (lyrics/Stones version)
- Jumpin' Jack Flash: The Rolling Stones - (lyrics)
- Blue Suede Shoes: Elvis - (I can't imagine anyone needs me to post the lyrics to the Elvis songs, as they are part of our collective unconscious at this point!)
- Burning Love: Elvis
- Wrote A Song For Everyone: Creedence Clearwater Revival - (lyrics)
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone,
Wrote a song for truth.
Wrote A Song For Ev'ryone
And I couldn't even talk to you.
- Postcards From Paradise: Flesh For Lulu (- listen to the original)
- Candida: Tony Orlando and Dawn - (lyrics)
- Another Girl, Another Planet: The Only Ones/Peter Perret (lyrics/listen to the original)
- Mr. Rabbit: Best-known version down by Burl Ives
- Kansas City Star: Roger Miller - (lyrics)
