The Sinclair, Cambridge, MA | April 27, 2015

The Replacements headlined the first night of Converse Rubber Tracks Live Boston, a free five-night event sponsored by Converse. Tickets were given away by Converse via a lottery last week and then the band itself gave away more tickets to their fans directly over the weekend. The opening act was a local band, The Young Leaves; Dinosaur Jr. was on next and then…the Mats.

Sporting Lone Ranger masks and toothy grins, the Replacements (and their replacements, as David Minehan (Neighborhoods) and Josh Freese (Devo, Nine Inch Nails) joined Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson) took the stage to raucous applause from the stuffed-to-the-rafters Sinclair. The band was never known for their crack precision or dedication to the craft; their infamous The Shit Hits The Fans bootleg preserved that part of their legacy for future generations. Flubbed chord changes, forgotten lyrics, and impromptu segues into fragments of Sabbath and T. Rex covers would all be part of tonight’s show…Introspective numbers such as “Unsatisfied,” precluded by Westerberg smashing his 12 string acoustic onto the floor into splinters, showed the yin and the yang of the band perfectly. Earlier in the set, Westerberg referred to the admission-free aspect of the night by saying “You’ll get your money’s worth – I guaran-fucking-tee it” and at show’s end there were no unsatisfied people among the horde that slowly exited into the rainy night.

Please view all of Tim’s pictures on Flickr, they are fantastic. I think this one is a stunner, though I’m sorry to say it makes smoking look like just about the coolest thing in the world. Don’t try this at home, kids!

Looks like someone got into the liquor when typing up the set list (“20th Century Goy”, “Bastardos”). The actual set list was quite different and included a glorious “Another Girl, Another Planet”.

One more photo gallery, this one from Josh Pickering. This is a good shot from the beginning of the show, that jacket and long-sleeved shirt didn’t last long, it got rather warm, rather quickly once the Mats took the stage.

Thanks to Bob Dunbar for posting a few videos from the show. “Within Your Reach” was one of the highlights of the night.

And that brings us to Shirt Watch, Show 7.
